CHAPTER 13

NICLAS

Lundy Bay.

Not his favourite spot. Niclas had never had much luck along this particular stretch of the Cornish coastline. It was partly why he hadn’t minded too much when Charlene poked her nose into his trip.

As much as her motivations aggravated him, Niclas was happy to allow her to have the rockiest beaches, which rarely offered much in the way of treasure. Lundy Bay had a few sections at low tide that were ripe for the picking.

Once they’d found a spot at the Lundy Bay car park, Niclas led his brother and Falk to the coastal path. It eventually veered off toward the beach, ending at wooden stairs. Fortunately, they found the beach relatively empty.

Niclas took his metal detector from Izan, who’d insisted on carrying it for him. “Not sure how you’ll entertain yourself while I’m scanning the beach. Please don’t hover.”

“I’d never.” Izan dodged out of the way when Niclas kicked sand at him. “Peace, peace. What does Falk do while you’re hunting for treasure?”

“He doesn’t bother me.” Niclas grabbed his headphones out of his bag. He got his detector turned on and ready to go. “You’re not here.”

“I mean, technically….” Izan trailed off when Falk grabbed him by the shoulder. “We’ll be over there.”

Not even looking in the direction his brother pointed, Niclas reached into his backpack for his notebook. He’d jotted down grids for each location. A general guide for himself to not only know where to start but to be able to mark off areas he’d searched and keep track of ones he hadn’t.

With the grid set in his mind, Niclas left his backpack on a large rock near his brother. He adjusted the volume on his headset and started the first sweep with the detector. It was challenging with an audience.

The first ten minutes were a waste. Niclas had to scan the same area three times. He kept glancing towards his brother and Falk, wondering what they were talking about.

His anxiety told him they were talking about him. Logically, Niclas knew it wouldn’t be anything terrible, even if they were. It took several minutes to calm and focus his mind.

With his little shovel dangling from his belt, Niclas went to work. He scanned half of the beach without finding anything. Not a massive surprise; Cornish coves were a gamble, since so many had come before to try to find treasures.

A lot of the beaches were picked clean. But he still discovered enough to bring him back every couple of years. And even with tourists packing the area, there was some measure of peace for him.

It was disheartening to have not found anything at all. He was jolted out of his thoughts when a hand rested on his shoulder. Falk held out a water bottle.

“Hydrate,” Falk said after Niclas had pulled the headphones off and looped them around his neck. “You’ve been going for over an hour. Drink some water.”

Niclas frowned at the water hovering in front of his face before finally taking it. He propped his metal detector against his side and chugged half the bottle down.
